Research Proposal
Intro to Epidemiology

For my final project in my Intro to Epidemiology class, I worked with a partner to create a research proposal for a health problem we considered a priority. We proposed a cohort study that looked at which form of vehicular transportation put people more at risk for short-term illness and also long-term respiratory disease.

From Problem to Solution Video
Survey to Public Health

This video was our intervention strategy for the problem my group decided was a public health priority. We chose congenital birth defects, specifically spina bifida, as our problem and worked together to create a solution to combat the problem. Our solution was increasing public understanding of the importance of folic acid during pregnancy. In the project, we also did a research paper, an infographic. This video acted as a potential PSA for spreading awareness about folic acid in a way that was easy to engage with and understand

Letter of Inquiry
Global Health

This letter was an assignment that replicated the process of writing a letter to ask for funding for a public health project. In this case, I was writing on behalf of my country, Belize, to convince the hypothetical funders that diabetes is a health priority in the country and needs funding to deal with the problem on a more serious level.

Ethnomedical Models in Medical TV Podcast
Medical Anthropology

This is the podcast recording that acted as my final in my medical anthropology class. Three other classmates and I decided to examine how the ethnomedical models we learned about in class were portrayed in an episode of Grey's Anatomy. We talked about the personal etiology through the Hmong patient's story in the episode, emotional etiology through the patient whose heartbreak was shown through physical symptoms, and naturalistic through the surgeon's experience. We looked at areas where these models were shown positively and areas where they faltered.

Political Economy of Belize Research Paper
Global Health

This paper was part of a semester-long project in my global health class, where I assessed the overall health of a country by looking at health systems, country health indicators, and progress towards health goals. For this paper, I took a political economy approach to looking at the health problem of diabetes in Belize. I did research on the history, economy, culture, demographics, and social behaviors of the country. This allowed me to find determinants that impacted people's risks and susceptibilities to acquiring diabetes at the global, national, community, and individual levels. It allows the reader to understand that there are more complex and broader issues to diabetes than just individual diet choices.

Trees Atlanta Volunteer Project
Scotties For Change

This was the first project I organized myself as an exec board member of the student organization, Scotties For Change. This project consisted of a collaboration with the nonprofit organization, Trees Atlanta. I organized sign-ups, transportation, and provided the necessary equipment to students who signed up to volunteer through our organization. For the project, we planted a variety of trees near a locally owned grocery store called Pyramid Grocery.
